Chapter Seven

Ray was nervous, and from the looks that Yvetta’s daughter shot his way every five minutes, he had every reason to be. Essentially, they were hostile glares. Gone was the friendly young woman who had so shamelessly flirted with him that long ago day. Instead, here sat an angry, judgmental harridan. And she had judged him and obviously found him guilty.

His mouth was dry and he reached for his water glass and took a long gulp, wishing it was a scotch instead. And the evening had started off so well.

He’d arrived in the afternoon, wanting to be ensconced before Tanisha and Cherise arrived. It also gave he and Yvetta some alone time together...which they passed in the most delightful manner. Just the thought of their hot, passionate grappling a few hours earlier brought a smile to his face, and had his cock twitching in his pants.

The hairs on the back of his neck sat up, and he realized that once again, Tanisha was scowling at him. She’d obviously noticed his dreamy smile and jumped to conclusions...probably the right ones, and that wasn’t good.

He pulled his eyes away from her, shifted in his chair to get more comfortable, and focused instead on Yvetta who was engaged in a lively discussion with Cherise. He liked Yvetta’s friend. From the moment they met, she had striven to make him feel welcomed and at ease. He appreciated her efforts. And he appreciated that she was keeping Yvetta amused and entertained so she was less likely to get nervous at what was, essentially, their coming out dinner.

“...so I finally said, sure I’ll have dinner with you,” Cherise said, waving her quarter filled wine glass for emphasis, “as long as your wife says it’s okay.”

Yvetta gasped, her delight in Cherise’s story evident in the grin she sported. “You didn’t! What did he say?”

“What could he say?” Cherise said. “He tucked his tail between his legs and skulked off into the crowd. I didn’t see him again for the rest of the evening.” She laughed and set her glass down to refill it.

“How did you know he was married?” Yvetta asked.

“Oh sweetie, he just had that look.”

“Look? There’s a look?” asked Ray.

Cherise grinned. “It’s an ‘aren’t-I-a-naughty-boy-getting-away-with-something’ look. All males perfect it by the time they hit puberty. They don’t think we girls can detect it, but we can.”

Ray put his hand over his heart. “Ouch. I do hope that you don’t really believe all men are like that.”

“Ray, sweetie,” said Cherise with genuine warmth, “I do believe you’re one of the rare good ones.”

“Oh pul-lease,” moaned Tanisha, rolling her eyes and pursing her lips in derision.

“Tanisha,” Yvetta said with a warning tone.

Cherise glanced over to the girl and raised her eyebrows. “What’s on your mind?”

Tanisha slumped in her chair and crossed her arms. She shot another scathing look at Ray, then turned her focus on her mom’s friend. “I’d rather not say,” she said through tight lips.

“Oh please,” said Cherise. “Your attitude and sour faces have fairly screamed your thoughts tonight, so why not just get them out on the table and clear the air.
